Trauma from occlusion (TFO) is the term for any occlusal force that damages periodontal structures beyond our periodontium's adaptive capacity. There are differing opinions on whether TFO is a cofactor or an etiological factor in the development of periodontal diseases. This review study aims to elucidate the true meaning of TFO, including its etiological aspects, historical context, pertinent terminology, signs and symptoms, and improved diagnostic techniques.
