ASSOCIATION OF SELECTED PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS ON PERFORMANCE OF BOXERS.

Abstract

This study was to find out the association of selected psychological factors on performance of boxers. Twenty men amateur boxers who competed at intercollegiate tournaments on boxing were randomly selected from affiliated colleges of Mahatma Gandhi University, Nalgonda.. Selected psychological variables, self concept, anxiety and aggression were measured using standard questionnaires, which were validated by the authors. The performance of the boxers was determined through three experts objectively. For this purpose the experts were expected score the performance of the boxers on five different boxing skills, for a maximum of 50 points. The results proved that mean on self concept was 37.45 anxiety mean scores of 38.6 and aggression mean scores of 193.35 and the performance scored for the maximum of 50 proved with mean score of 32.45. The association between psychological variables and performance of the boxers proved that the obtained ‘r’ values of 0.642, -0.529 and 0.471 on self concept, anxiety and aggression were significant. It is further proved that there were positive relationship between psychological variables self concept and aggression on the boxing performance, while there was negative significant association between anxiety and performance of boxers. It was concluded that selected psychological variables, self concept, anxiety and aggression have signification association with the performance of boxers.
