The most fundamental demographic factor is the sex composition of a population since it affects marriage and population growth rates. The ratio between the sexes also affects some other significant population characteristics, such as migration, occupation structure, etc. Population geographers are very interested in studying the ratio between the two sexes because their roles are somewhat complementary and partly contrasting.
