CONSUMER PROTECTION IN INDIA: LEGAL FRAMEWORK, CHALLENGES, AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS
Abstract
Consumer protection in India has undergone significant transformation over the years, evolving from basic safeguards against fraud and exploitation to a more comprehensive legal framework that aims to ensure justice, fairness, and dignity for consumers. This paper explores the current legal structure of consumer protection in India, focusing on key legislations such as the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 and the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, while addressing the challenges of enforcement, consumer awareness, and emerging issues such as e-commerce and digital consumer rights. It also evaluates the role of the judiciary, public policy, and consumer advocacy organizations in shaping the protection of consumer rights in India. The paper concludes with recommendations for improving the existing framework to better address contemporary challenges and safeguard consumer interests.
