Abstract

Diet occupies a central position in āyurvedika physiology, where āhāra is regarded as the primary determinant of health and disease. Classical āyurvedika texts describe eight determinants governing dietary outcome, collectively termed aṣṭāhāra-vidhiviśeṣāyatana. These include inherent food properties, processing, combinations, quantity, habitat, timing, behavioral conduct of eating, and individuality of the consumer. The present integrative narrative review analyzes these determinants through classical textual interpretation and contemporary nutrition science. Evidence from modern research in personalized nutrition, chronobiology, food synergy, behavioral nutrition, and ecological health demonstrates strong conceptual parallels with āyurvedika dietary theory. The āyurvedika framework anticipates systems-based nutritional models in which dietary outcome emerges from dynamic interaction between food, environment, behavior, and individual physiology. Reinterpreting these principles through modern scientific language highlights their relevance for preventive healthcare and metabolic disease management. The integrative perspective suggests that ancient āyurvedika dietary science offers valuable conceptual tools for advancing holistic and personalized nutrition strategies. Future interdisciplinary research is needed to empirically evaluate these determinants while preserving their conceptual integrity.
