META-ANALYSIS ON MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH OF ATHLETES DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC
Abstract
This meta-analysis investigates the multifaceted effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental and physical well-being of athletes. Ten studies were systematically reviewed, revealing pervasive levels of anxiety, depression, stress, and psychological distress among athletes, with elite athletes and those in individual sports experiencing even higher levels of distress. Eight studies specifically identified elevated levels of depression among athletes. Furthermore, a significant decline in athletes' performance was noted due to the pandemic. In addition to mental health challenges, physical health obstacles were also prominent, with cardiovascular symptoms being particularly prevalent among athletes, as indicated by nine studies.
