Abstract

The translational enterprise in the colonial period up to 1947 and how those translational activities then came to be known in the field of translation studies. The objective and politics of translation during colonial period could be found out. The various great writers in different languages in India wrote their masterpieces and they were later translated from source languages into the target ones. The translation activities of different groups and societies during colonial period were undertaken. It could easily be understood how the Europeans, especially Britishers such as the colonials, orientalists and members of the East India Company were instrumental in bringing about the translational activities in India then. Finally, the contribution of the Indian scholars was immense to the translations of various Indian books and English ones as well.
