Abstract

The New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a revolutionary change in Indian education system which has planned to provide more inclusiveness, flexibility, internationalization while being rooted in Indian ethos. This policy encourages the concept of development of the whole person, use of multiple disciplines and approaches and use of technology. Some of the major changes include switching from 6+3+3+2 structure to 5+3+3+4 structure in schools, encouraging early childhood care and education, stressing on vocational training and stressing on critical thinking rather than rote learning. More students are to be able to attend higher education and with more options to enter and exit at different levels, interdisciplinary degrees and the four year undergraduate degree. The NEP also supports the teaching in regional languages with an aim of enhancing the cultural and linguistic diversity of India. This abstract focuses on the impact of the NEP on students, teachers and institutions, considering the advantages and the problematic issues in practice. It is also argued how this policy has a long term effect on employability, equity in education and conformity to international standards making it a policy of reform with profound consequences for India’s future.
