Rasayana as a Holistic Strategy for Healthy Aging: Bridging Ayurvedic Wisdom and Modern Science
Abstract
Rasayana is a specialized branch of Ayurveda focused on rejuvenation, longevity, immunity enhancement, and promotion of overall health. Derived from the concepts of Rasa (nutritive essence) and Ayana (circulation), Rasayana aims to optimize tissue nourishment, improve metabolic functions, and enhance vitality. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe Rasayana as a means to promote longevity, intellect, strength, and resistance to disease through the maintenance of Dhatus, Agni, Srotas, and Ojas. In addition to herbal formulations, Rasayana incorporates dietary practices, lifestyle modifications, and ethical conduct (Achara Rasayana). Contemporary research has demonstrated antioxidant, immunomodulatory, adaptogenic, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties of several Rasayana drugs, including Amalaki, Ashwagandha, Guduchi, and Brahmi. This review highlights the classical foundations, classifications, mechanisms of action, and modern scientific evidence supporting Rasayana therapy. The integrative nature of Rasayana offers significant potential for healthy aging, disease prevention, and contemporary healthcare.
