Health Status of Tamil Nadu in India: An Overview
Abstract
This overview analyzes the health status of Tamil Nadu, India, highlighting its significant achievements and remaining challenges. The state outperforms national averages on key indicators, including lower fertility (TFR 1.7), infant mortality (IMR 17), and maternal mortality (MMR 60), driven by a robust healthcare infrastructure, near-universal institutional deliveries (99%), and high immunization (85%) and sanitation (98%) coverage. Tamil Nadu also excels in women's healthcare, with superior antenatal and postnatal care rates. However, the state faces a growing burden of non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension, alongside persistent issues of anemia and nutritional deficiencies. The findings position Tamil Nadu as a leading model in India's healthcare landscape, though targeted efforts are needed to address emerging and ongoing health concerns.
