Abstract

India faces significant challenges in ensuring food safety and security for its growing population of over 1.4 billion people. This comprehensive study examines the complex interplay between legislative frameworks, implementation challenges, and future perspectives in India's food safety and security landscape. The research analyses the effectiveness of key legislation, including the Food Safety and Standards Act (2006) and the National Food Security Act (2013), while identifying critical gaps in implementation and enforcement. Through extensive policy analysis and evaluation of governmental data, this study reveals persistent challenges in food safety monitoring, inadequate infrastructure for testing facilities, and fragmented regulatory oversight. The research highlights how urbanization, changing dietary patterns, and climate change impacts further complicate food safety and security measures. Notable findings indicate that despite robust legislative frameworks, implementation gaps result in significant food safety violations and compromised food security, particularly affecting vulnerable populations. The study proposes a multi-faceted approach combining technological innovation, strengthened institutional capacity, and enhanced stakeholder coordination to address these challenges. Recommendations include establishing integrated food safety monitoring systems, improving cold chain infrastructure, and developing more efficient mechanisms for policy implementation. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on food governance in developing nations and provides valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders working towards enhancing India's food safety and security framework.
