Abstract

The transition of Mysore from a princely state to a modern Indian state during the mid-20th century was significantly shaped by the leadership of Jayachamaraja Wodeyar, the last Maharaja of Mysore. Ascending the throne in 1940, Wodeyar’s reign coincided with a pivotal period in Indian history marked by the struggle for independence and the reconfiguration of princely states within the Indian Union. Wodeyar's role was multifaceted, encompassing political, administrative, and social reforms that facilitated Mysore’s integration into India. His support for the Indian independence movement, demonstrated through alignment with national leaders such as Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, was instrumental in aligning Mysore with the broader goals of the Indian National Congress. This support was crucial for negotiating the terms of Mysore’s integration into the Indian Union and ensuring a smooth transition.
