Abstract

This paper examines the educational framework depicted in the Ramayana as an integral part of the broader Indian Knowledge System (IKS). It argues that education in the Ramayana period was holistic, encompassing not only Vedic learning but also moral, political, military, vocational, and artistic training. The study highlights how education was deeply embedded in social, cultural, and spiritual life, shaping individuals into ethically grounded and socially responsible beings. The paper explores the role of institutions such as the gurukul and the ashram system, as well as the importance of the guru–shishya tradition in transmitting knowledge. It further examines the widespread presence of Vedic learning across different sections of society, including rulers, sages, common people, and even non-human characters within the narrative. The inclusion of disciplines such as Dhanurveda (military science), Ayurveda (medicine), fine arts, astrology, and vocational skills demonstrate the comprehensive nature of education. Additionally, the study highlights the integration of moral values such as truth, duty (dharma), self-discipline, and forgiveness into the educational process. Through examples from the text particularly the character of Rama, it illustrates how education was aimed at character formation as much as intellectual development. The paper concludes that the Ramayana presents an advanced and integrated model of education that combined intellectual, practical, and ethical dimensions. This holistic paradigm offers valuable insights for contemporary discussions on education, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that nurtures both knowledge and values.
