ICT based services in Academic Library
Abstract
This paper critically examines the transformative role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in modern academic libraries. The rapid advancement of digital technologies has fundamentally reshaped library services, moving from traditional custodial roles to dynamic, user-centered, technology-driven hubs. This study analyzes the spectrum of ICT-based services—including digital repositories, virtual reference, discovery systems, institutional repositories, and mobile services—and evaluates their impact on enhancing information access, user experience, and research support in higher education institutions. While acknowledging significant benefits such as 24/7 accessibility, personalized services, and resource optimization, the paper also addresses implementation challenges including digital divides, skill gaps, and sustainability issues. Through systematic analysis, this research demonstrates that strategic ICT integration is not merely an enhancement but a fundamental requirement for academic libraries to remain relevant in the digital age. Recommendations for effective implementation and future directions are provided to guide library administrators and policymakers.
