"A Study on the Principles and Future Directions of Environmental Science in India: Towards Sustainability Education"
Abstract
This paper explores the tenets and potential pathways of environmental science education in India with a focus on institutions of sustainability education. The study views such existing environmental education practices, takes on board an institution’s sustainability plan, and incorporates education institutions to make a culture of sustainability through the use of secondary data from verifiable sources up to 2018. The main conclusions show that students have very different views of what sustainability means—a focus on environmental rather than managerial issues. A high emphasis is placed on how higher education institutions can adopt sustainability measures using campus recycling systems and environmental education programs. Statistical analyses (e.g., ANOVA) of sustainability programs show significant differences in success rates using classes of focused instructional strategies. It offers important lessons on the gaps in what we know about sustainability education, and particularly in the problems faced by institutions, and what might be done. In the light of these findings, suggestions for how sustainability education can be improved include building inventiveness curriculum, better teacher preparation, and cooperation between educational stakeholders. This study contributes to the conversation on sustainability education in India by building support for a more holistic teaching method for environmental science that will prepare students for the challenges ahead in the field of sustainable development.
