THE 'KAINYA BIYA' OF THE BARAK VALLEY: IN THE MIRROR OF FOLKLORE

Abstract

The folk festival called 'Kainya Biya' is basically an extended version of 'Putul Bier' in the playhouses of teenage girls in rural Bengal. The time to give 'Kainya Biya' is in the month of Baisakh. There is no specific day, there is no Tithi, from 1st to 30th of the month of Baishakh, the practice of giving 'Kainya Biya' is common. A popular game among small village girls is puppet play. Playing dolls was a pastime for teenage girls, just like cooking at home. Gradually, a folk culture called 'Kainya Biya' emerged from this puppet play. The society and culture of the Barak Valley has gained many excellences with the remarkable change of time. With the evolution of time, the ceremony called 'Kainya Biya' is almost extinct today.
