Digitalization Practices and Their Impact on the Indian Banking Sector
Abstract
Digital banking enables customers to access faster services at a lower cost. It not only improves the quality of banking services but also helps in reducing operational expenses. Online banking, in particular, has proven to be more cost-effective for banks, which in turn can result in reduced charges for customers. The primary objective of this study is to examine the impact of digitalization in the context of e-banking services. Traditionally, the relationship between banks and their customers was built on a one-to-one interaction. However, the digital revolution in banking has only recently begun. At present, most conventional banks are in the initial stage, offering their customers internet and mobile-based platforms. A transformative approach is one where digital banking is not just an additional service but a fully integrated experience, enabling customers to use smartphones or tablets for a wide range of activities—from opening accounts and making payments to resolving billing disputes—without ever visiting a physical branch. With the emergence of new technologies such as mobile applications, digital wallets, and other fintech innovations, an increasing number of customers are adopting and utilizing the digital financial services provided by banks. This paper highlights the role of digital banking technologies in reshaping financial operations, with particular reference to their impact on the Indian economy and cultural practices.
