Abstract

This paper explores the concept of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in India, focusing specifically on Lok Adalat. ADR has emerged as a crucial mechanism for resolving disputes outside the traditional courtroom setting, offering time-efficient and cost-effective alternatives. Lok Adalat, a unique ADR method indigenous to India, emphasizes informal, consensual dispute resolution. The paper examines the historical evolution, legal framework, functioning, and effectiveness of Lok Adalat in promoting justice and alleviating the burden on the judiciary. It also identifies challenges and suggests reforms to enhance its efficacy.
