Abstract

Cognitive mapping in avian species refers to the mental representation of spatial environments that enables birds to navigate, orient, and remember key locations such as food caches, nesting sites, and migratory routes. This comparative study explores the varying degrees of cognitive mapping across different avian species, considering the neurobiological, ecological, and behavioral factors influencing their spatial intelligence. Through examining species such as pigeons, migratory birds, and food-storing birds, this study highlights the complex strategies employed by birds to navigate their environments. Pigeons are recognized for their homing abilities, relying on a combination of visual, olfactory, and magnetic cues to guide their return to familiar locations. Migratory species, such as warblers and geese, use a broader array of cues, including the Earth's magnetic field and celestial navigation, to undertake long-distance journeys with remarkable accuracy. Food-storing birds, like Clark's nutcracker, demonstrate highly advanced spatial memory, utilizing their hippocampus to memorize the locations of thousands of cached food items.
