Abstract

Kapu caste, once ignored by the society ,now goes ahead with its imprints in the socio-economic and political aspects of Andhra Pradesh. After the assassination of Vangaveeti Ranga in 1988, this caste acquired a strong social identity. Since then many Kapu leaders have been working for the social, political and economic advancement of that community Telugu society recognized the political potential of this caste as the Praja Rajyam Party(PRP) founded by Chiranjeevi in 2009 emerged as a force. Later PRP merged with the congress party due to many reasons .After the death of the chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy in 2009, major changes such as the formation of the YSRCongress Party, bifurcation of the state and the formation of Janasena took place .Particularly the Janasena Party founded by Pawan kalian emerged as a strong force by forging an alliance with TDP and BJP in the 2014 general election. Janasena seem to have brought back to the center the confidence that Kapus lost after the PRP experiment. It is no surprise that now Janasena is standing as the third alternative in the state. The journey by the kapu caste to occupy the third position next only to the Kamma and Reddy castes is needs to be understood from a political economy perspective.
