Abstract

India is home to a large number of tribes which constitutes 8.6% of the country's total population. The scheduled tribes of our country are distinguished from any other community in terms of their primitiveness, remoteness, and social and economic backwardness. The tribal communities of India are known to be the autochthonous people of the land. The tribal groups of India inhabit extreme geo-climatic conditions with distinct socio-cultural and economic backgrounds. Study objectives To assess the anthropometric characteristics and nutritional status of Scheduled tribe populations (Santhal, Sabar, and Bhumij) in the Western plateau fringe of West Bengal, India with the help of Body Mass Index (BMI) and Mid Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC). It also attempted to present a comparative analysis of anthropometric characteristics and prevalence of undernutrition among Santhal, Sabar and the Bhumij tribes of the Western plateau fringe of West Bengal along with other tribes of West Bengal.
