A significant area of research in “computer science is artificial intelligence (AI)”. Although AI has a wide range of medical applications, it will be especially useful in ophthalmology and will fundamentally alter how many eye disorders, including “corneal ectasias, glaucoma, agerelated macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy”, are diagnosed and treated. However, because AI has been predominantly developed as a branch of computer science, many medical experts are not conversant with its concepts and jargon. Deep learning and machine learning are two crucial but sometimes misunderstood words that are incorrectly used interchangeably. An overview of recent advancements in AI and ophthalmology is provided in this article.
